Management Implications
Through
our research, we have discovered that the amount of time that cars wait for a
parking spot in the morning is significant.
This idling time emits carbon dioxide into the air, which is harmful to
the watershed. In order to reduce
idling time, these are some suggestions that we came up with for the Edgewood
College campus:
1. Encourage carpooling of students to reduce the number of commuters on campus.
2. Encourage
commuters to shut off their car when they are waiting for a parking spot (this
eliminates idling time, and it is false that gas is wasted by doing this).
3. Limit the number of parking permits given out to students to reduce the number of vehicles on campus.
4.
Increase
the number of parking spots to match the number of parking permits given out to
students.
It is important to remember that for every gallon of gas that is burned while driving a car, 20 pounds of carbon dioxide is released in to the atmosphere. This figure is slightly lower when a car is idling, but it is still harmful to the watershed’s health.
