Composting: The effects of material consistency and mulching

The purpose of this experiment was to measure the effect that mixing browns and greens and mulching composting materials had on the rate of decomposition.  We set up four bins containing various combinations of mulched, unmulched, mixed (leaves and lake weeds) and non-mixed (leaves) materials.  By recording the temperature of each bin, we were able to gain insight on how much decomposition was taking place.  Our results show some support of our hypothesis that a mixture of brown and green material and mulching will be the most effective compost; however, we would need to conduct this experiment for a longer amount of time and with some alterations to be able to better support our hypothesis and measure the actual effect of the two variables.
